Jamini Roy was trained in the western tradition at Calcutta's Government School of Art and Crafts. However, in his creations and freedom of expression, Roy drew on the cultural traditions of India rather than Europe. The Kalighat Pat particularly influenced him. This ability to break down the barriers between indigenous influences and his academic training resulted in his unique personal idiom, with its strong sense of line, design and colour. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1955. |
