The day's art is universal. Perhaps it represents the expression of a freed contemporary imagination. Like at the dawn of time men learnt to smear ochre on the cave walls, so today mankind dwarfed by his own magical tools is learning to discover his innermost thoughts and feelings through the aesthetic media which are independent of the limitations of discursive and technical language. Art thus is a gift of the seeing inner eye, that reality interpreting organ, and as of course of the world mirroring consciousness. At its best, then, art works be token the thrust of the divinity restless human mind.
It is in this light we must consider all art, including this group show, with its often figurative works. Here are varied facets of Indian life and its diverse humanity in different stages of being. The artists reform that humanity afresh in their perceptions via paint and brush, each artist in his own way. So that over here is sufficient evidence of sense and sensibility. The empathy of these art composers enrich the nuances of whatever they observe directly or via the cogitating consciousness. Such psychic quality is seen in the compositions of the meditative, Rajiv Ranjan, as in the richly decorative mudras of Manas Ranjan Jena, in the feminine coy beauty of Kumar Singha and Piyush Kanti Bera, and in the moving workings of Ranjeet Singh, dwelling compassionately on the waifs floating for survival in the big cities of India. None of theses painters are imitative of each other. Each appears linked to his own stream of thought.
Till not long ago our art would seem to have borrowed hugely from the west. But right now, and at its best, with self-renewing power, it is beginning to pay back its debts. This is true considering the artistic concerns over here. The artists are attempting to make modern movement more humane as also technically sound. The aesthetic of the artists ranges interestingly representing the current actualities of life and living. If they celebrate life in a play of colours at the same time some of them are in search of the eternal above the passing and the ephemeral. Artist Bhim Malhotra presents not figurative but the innocence of pristine nature feelingly. Several other artists express the body warmth that the heart gives out in such abundance so as to humanize a consumerist culture. Since their spontaneous freedom intact these artists may well take higher flights of imagination in the time to come.
The exhibition curated by artist Ruki Chatterjee-trained in Vienna surely proves her concern for art and the life of mind.
