The Environment Drive - An Individual Initiative

Being Committed to the cause of environment, pollution control and to the overall concern for better living, German News begins a series on private and individual initiatives in India as well in Germany, which are exemplary in their aims and objectives. Even if the outreach is not on a large scale but benefits a small sector of the society, these initiatives are worth copying. Here we present you with the successful drive to improve the surroundings of Nehru Place in Delhi. Paharpur Business Centre has its headquarters situated in Nehru Place, locally known as commercially hub of Delhi, one of the most polluted cities of the world. Faced with these features, PBC began its environmental drive under the leadership of its director Kamal Meattle. The Focus was to clean the surroundings and improve the working environment in the Business Centre. The Eco-drive started reaching out to the concerned authorities and sought their help. The municipal authorities extended help in relocating garbage disposal bins and in cleaning up the surroundings. Fumigation was carried out which is still periodically done. The dark roads now have streetlights, traffic was regulated with signboards and parking signs in public interest were put at strategic locations. Launch of "Nehru Place Greens" The project of "Nehru Place Greens" was established with the primary objective of changing the image of Nehru place and making the surrounding area greener. A memorandum of understanding was signed with the Municipal corporation of Delhi by which PBC formally took over the restoration of the approx. 17,000 sqm. area and maintenance of the park. Boundary walls were built, a path way made in the park, tree guard built and area was cleared and cleaned Clean up and green campaigns involved the staff of PBC and most of them have a tree that they have planted. A number of dignitaries have shown their support to the cause and have planted trees, including the Governor of the Delhi and German Ambassador Dieckmann and his wife. A variety of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs have been planted such as teak, silver oak, poplars, harshingar, maulshri and bauhinia. These help in fixing ambient carbon dioxide and nitrous dioxide levels. And now the park, with flowers in boom is a delight to the office goers and visitors to this area.
