The man behind the Paharpur Business Centre and the Nehru Place Greens - Kamal Meattle - belies the typecast image of successful businessman, a big shot who shoulders tremendous responsibility. Down to earth and charming, he has recently also assumed the chairmanship of Indo-American Chamber of Commerce while he also simultaneously chairs the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce. Talk to the man in his eco-friendly office and you instantly realise his global and futuristic aims. Ask him how he intends to take our country ahead with his newly assumed position, he says "You have to make the conditions more investor friendly ; you can only prosper when the trade flourishes and the economy is stable". He asks, why is it that the US takes more interest in trading with China than with us? Because conditions there are more trade friendly; here it takes ages to get the goods cleared through the customs. If we want business from MNC’s we have to provide them conducive conditions. We have to realise that US is our biggest client. One of the services he provides are the ready made offices for the MNC’s. Other facilities are catering, tours and travel and car hire. All that a company has to do is step into the building with their staff and Paharpur Business Centre has a ready infrastructure. But
work, work and more work - is that all he does? What does he do in leisure?
" I spend it with my family, rather than meeting people I should be",
he says. There’s hardly time for anything else. He doesn’t remember the last movie he ever saw. But theatre and music do interest him. His two sons and daughter are all set to follow in their father’s footsteps. Already his elder son and daughter are actively involved in business and the younger one, who is in class 11 is keenly interested too. "He is into internet and computers and often does research for us, and he expects to be paid for it too", smiles Kamal. Of course there are good days and bad; good points and as well as disturbing; but for him, what is significant is being at peace with oneself at the end of the day. |
